A GSM unit allows your lift’s emergency phone (autodialler) to make calls over the mobile network instead of relying on a traditional landline. This is especially useful in buildings without a fixed line, or where phone lines are being phased out.

Retrofitting a GSM unit is often cheaper than replacing the entire autodialler system, though compatibility depends on the existing equipment. GSM units are typically installed near the autodialler, but if mobile signal is weak in the lift shaft, the unit may need to be installed elsewhere — such as in a nearby cupboard or riser. In these cases, additional cabling may be required, and the autodialler itself may need to be relocated, which can increase installation costs.

In some cases, where signal strength is consistently poor, a GSM unit may not be a suitable solution. We always carry out signal tests before installation to make sure it’s the right option for your site.
