The basic principle.
Guide rails define the intended travel path. Shoes or rollers on the car frame engage with the rails to control sideways movement while permitting vertical travel.
The suspension or hydraulic lifting arrangement normally supports the car vertically. Guides perform a different job, although rails may also receive forces from safety gear when that equipment operates.
A sideways disturbance.
The guide arrangement transfers lateral forces from the moving frame to the rails and their supports. Its condition influences alignment and ride quality.

Connect it to the lift.
Sliding and roller guides have different contact and maintenance requirements. Rail alignment, joints, guide condition and adjustment interact. A vibration at one point in travel is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof of a particular failed part.
A closer look
Rail surface requirements depend on the guide and safety-gear system. Lubrication should never be assumed suitable merely because two surfaces are in contact.

Are guide shoes normally what lift the car upwards?
Reveal the explanation
No. They guide the moving assembly; the traction or hydraulic arrangement provides the lifting action.
