Car doors travel with the lift car. Landing doors remain at each floor and separate the landing from the shaft. Their functions overlap at an entrance but their locations and mechanisms differ.
When the car is at a landing, the opening arrangement coordinates the two sets of doors. Away from the car, landing doors need their intended restraint and locking functions.

The car doors move away with the car while the landing doors stay behind, maintaining the entrance barrier through their designed closing and locking arrangement.

Panels, tracks, hangers and sills all influence reliable movement. Debris in accessible sill grooves can cause symptoms, but investigating mechanisms or releasing doors is work for authorised personnel. Door type and installation history affect the details.
A closer look
Some installations have manual landing doors or different car-gate arrangements. The automatic two-door-set example is common, not universal.
