Identify how the lift is loaded and used.
A dumbwaiter is a small goods-only lift used to move items between floors. Restaurants may use one for dishes and food; other sites may move documents, supplies or laundry. Its small size does not remove the need for appropriate maintenance and safe use.
The opening arrangement matters. Some lifts are loaded at serving or counter height, often through vertically sliding shutters. Others have floor-level openings for loads suited to that design. Manufacturer BKG illustrates these different service-lift configurations.
A floor-level opening does not make the lift suitable for carrying a person. Use must follow its marked capacity, intended purpose and operating instructions. Tell us what you move, how it is loaded and whether use has changed since the lift was installed.
Look beyond a call button that does not respond.
A dumbwaiter may stop responding because a door or shutter has not reached the required closed and locked condition. The fault could also involve a control, position sensor, drive or other part of the installation. Repeatedly pressing buttons does not identify the cause.
Useful symptoms include a particular landing failing to call the lift, a shutter becoming difficult to close, unusual travel noise or the car stopping above or below its loading position. Note whether it happens empty or with the normal permitted load, without deliberately recreating an unsafe condition.
Door interlocks help prevent movement with an opening unsecured and restrict access to the shaft. A door that opens when the car is absent is a serious defect: stop use, keep people away and seek engineering assistance. Do not force a shutter, bridge a lock contact or reach into the shaft to retrieve goods.
Maintain it around the demands of the site.
A busy meal service places different demands on equipment from occasional document transport. Maintenance arrangements need to consider frequency of use, loading, the environment and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
The engineer’s work may include the drive and suspension arrangement, guides, stopping equipment, controls, and landing doors or shutters, according to the model. Moisture, spills and impact damage are relevant information when planning attendance; cleaning and maintenance methods must suit the equipment.
Arrange a work window with someone who can provide access to all served floors. Keep the route to the lift clear and tell us about restricted kitchen hours or other operational constraints. If the lift is unavailable, an agreed alternative for moving goods reduces pressure to keep faulty equipment in service.
Record findings and plan the repair.
Forge can investigate dumbwaiter faults and repair options once we have identified the installation. Our findings should distinguish work completed from parts, further investigation or follow-up still needed. Parts availability and access can affect how the repair is arranged.
Maintenance does not replace a thorough examination. For lifting equipment covered by LOLER, examination arrangements depend on its category and any examination scheme; HSE explains the requirements. Forge does not carry out LOLER examinations in-house. We can help arrange an independent provider or put you in touch directly.

Start with your installation
What to send us.
- Make, model, rated capacity and photographs of the lift and identification plate.
- Number of stops, loading height and door or shutter arrangement.
- Goods normally carried, frequency of use and the fault symptoms.
- Previous reports, site postcode and access or operating-hour restrictions.
Existing reports and photographs from safe, accessible areas are useful. You do not need to open equipment or enter a lift shaft to make an enquiry.

Common questions.
Is a dumbwaiter the same as a goods lift?
It is a type of small goods-only lift, often called a service lift. The wider term “goods lift” can also describe larger equipment, including installations designed to carry an attendant. Check the specific lift’s permitted use; a dumbwaiter must not carry people.
Can we increase the load or use it for a different task?
Do not exceed the marked capacity or assume a different load is suitable because it fits. Tell us what has changed. The installation and intended use need assessment before any alteration is proposed.
Do you take on one-off dumbwaiter repairs?
Yes. You can enquire about a repair without a maintenance contract. We will assess the make, configuration and reported problem before confirming the approach and any further information needed.
